Liverpool

Hello! The next step on our trip was to spend a couple days in Liverpool! We had beautiful days full of blue sky and a lot of Beatles related activities, as you will be able to tell from the upcoming pictures! One general trend that Jake and I mentioned several times during our stay in Liverpool was its similarity to Chicago. Take a look!

We stopped for dinner at a burger place and had the most outstanding veggie burgers! The picture doesn't really do it justice, but it was so scrumptious!

We loved the royal mailbox!

Some of these pictures actually come from a ferris wheel ride. I immediately got excited when we saw the ferris wheel, but we weren't initially sure if it was worth paying for, since each loop around only lasted a few minutes. However, being the analytical and money-conscious people we were, we sat down in the grass nearby the ferris wheel and watched how many times people went around to see if it was a good deal haha. We were able to go around 4 times and were able to see some beautiful views of the city while doing so! It was a great activity to do on our first evening in Liverpool to help see the city!

It's the yellow submarine!

Beatlemania is everywhere in Liverpool, and there were even several sculptures and statues in honor of the Beatles. This memorial is the official European John Lennon Peace memorial.

There was also a very large Beatles store.

We enjoyed walking along Albert Dock and found an interesting statue created to remember families who left the UK for the US during the 19th Century.

A few love locks…although surprisingly we have not see that many on the trip.

This is the propeller from the famous ship, the Lusitania, which was sunk by the Germans in 1915 and
is seen as one of the reasons the United States ended up joining in WWI.

Not exactly sure what these creatures are… maybe a mix between a dog and a banana? Regardless, there were quite a few around the city and reminded me of some of the exhibits of painted or decorate cows and couches that have taken place in Chicago in years past.

It's the 5th Beatle!

On our second day in Liverpool, we took the Mersey Ferries river cruise around Liverpool, which included stops at the Spaceport and U-Boat Story exhibit.

Some silly photos before we entered Spaceport!

We loved all of the fun color on the Mersey Ferry!

This image illustrates some of the iconic Liverpool skyline. From left to right we have the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, the Port of Liverpool Building (these three are known as the Three Graces), the Radio City Tower, and the Liverpool City Museum.

Next we visited the U-Boat Story, which allowed us to look into a U-Boat that was initially sunk and brought back to the surface. It was very interesting.

These vintage Ice Cream truck were common sites around the city.

This goes out to the four Bill's in my family! Jake and I did not have time to eat here, but I had to take a picture!

Here is a piece of art of the Beatles made out of jelly beans that was in a candy shop!

This brings us to the Beatles Story, which is a four part, highly interactive experience that takes you through the whole story of the Beatles, from the very beginning. I really enjoyed this experience and learned a lot about them. I also took a lot of pictures for you, David! The exhibit was very interesting because in each room they recreated various places and stages in their lives, such as the Cavern Club, recording studio, etc. There were also four individual exhibits that contained some interesting footage of each man after the Beatles had separated.

Manhattan, IL? Probably not, but thought it was worth a shout-out!

Some statues from the Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool

After going through the Beatles exhibit, we also stopped at two other museums, the Maritime Museum of Liverpool and the International Slavery Museum. Both of the museums were incredible. The Maritime Museum had a large Titanic exhibit, and the International Slavery Museum had several exhibits about the Atlantic Slave Trade/Middle Passage to bring slaves to the New World, global African culture today, a slavery in India exhibit, and some information about slavery in the world today.  I think it is really important to educated ourselves about slavery in our world today, and try to connect it back to my school curriculum. Jake and I both found the exhibit incredibly powerful and feel we have a lot of great resources to bring back to the classroom. I know that this past year, several students thought that slavery no longer existed, and many were stunned that there are still roughly 25-30 million slaves around the world, largely composed of forced labor and human/sex trafficking. I definitely think its eye-opening for many students to really look into their own patterns of shopping and consumption of goods, and to think of the human impacts that accompany those items. If you are interested in learning more about modern slavery issues, you can check out the International Slavery museum website link here, or the A21 website link here. (A21 is a non-profit I have supported in the past that works to stop slavery and sex trafficking and provides programs to help former slaves heal physically and emotional and helps them reclaim their identities.)

Our last stop in Liverpool was a visit to the World Museum, in which we visited some exhibits on Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, some World Cultures exhibits, and a short period of time in a Mayan exhibit. It was such a great museum and we were sad we only had three hours before we had to catch our train to London! Here are a couple pictures from the museum.

All in all, Liverpool was an amazing place! We definitely loved the museums (most of which were free) and being along the water was beautiful! If you are considering a visit (and especially if you like museums like we do), give yourself an extra day in Liverpool if possible. Most attractions in the city operate on a 10am-5pm basis, so we did feel like we were cramming in parts of these museums, and there were still several that we didn't even make it to! Still, it was a wonderful time, and then we were off to London!

Hope you all had a great weekend and will have an excellent week ahead!
