1st Green Tip Tuesday!
Hello and happy Tuesday! I have been home from college the past few weeks for my winter break, and have spent some time brainstorming about what I want to do with this blog in the upcoming months. I definitely want to increase my posting that relate to some of my other passions besides food. Therefore, I thought it would be perfect to have "Green Tip Tuesdays", in which I address different aspects of being green and increasing sustainability in how we live our daily lives!
So, for our very first Green Tip Tuesday, we will be talking about going shampoo free!
I had been doing some online research and came across this post from Simple Mom. She described how she went shampoo free and offers great tips!
Right now you are probably thinking that I am a bit crazy, which is definitely true. My family was a bit horrified when I told them I was going to give it a try.
What does the method entail exactly?
Well, instead of washing your hair with shampoo, you can wash your hair with a mixture of baking soda and water. The ratios vary based on your hair type, but since I have fine hair that is sometimes more greasy, I make a paste with about equal parts of baking soda and water. After my hair has fully adjusted to being shampoo free, I hope to use less baking soda with a little more water.
What are the benefits of going shampoo free?
Since shampoo is a detergent, it strips your hair of its essential oils. Therefore, using shampoo also means we have to use conditioner and other products to replace the oils and make it manageable, and our scalp responds by also producing more oil. The vicious cycle repeats itself, and you must continue using and buying hair products, many of which contain chemicals that are absorbed into the skin. Washing your hair with baking soda is very cheap and healthy for your hair, body, and the environment!
If you experience dryness, you can make a "conditioner" of sorts by using an approximate mixture of 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 cup water and put it on the ends of your hair, as you would apply conditioner. My hair is pretty short right now, so I have found I don't really need the vinegar mixture at this point.
For about 20 days so far I have been using the baking soda water mixture instead of shampoo and I really like it! Granted, my hair is still adjusting and is a little greasy sometimes, but it feels softer and it saves times in the shower. I am optimistic that it will work, and would love the convenience of not needing shampoo, conditioner, and countless other hair products in the future. And think of all the money saved!
I will keep you posted (literally :) of how this is working in the days to come! Have a great night!
